Do You Worship Only God?

1 Kings 18:20-21 (NASB)
20 So Ahab sent a message among all the sons of Israel and brought the prophets together at Mount Carmel.
21 Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people did not answer him a word.

Long before Aristotle and Plato, Elijah made plain the laws of logic to the people of Israel. For these laws of logic are created by God. If you had a class in college in philosophy, you may have been introduced to first principles of logic. They are the principles of identity, non-contradiction, and excluded middle. They are the truths of logic just like the truths of mathematics. Any argument of logic that violates any of these principles cannot be true.

In today’s world, there are many that like to say that truth is relative. That statement in itself violates the laws of logic. And so it was in Elijah’s time. Ahab, who was the most evil king of Israel up to that time worshiped two gods; he worshiped both as creator of all. Evil will take half-truths and turn them into an argument that seems to make sense, until you test it against first principles.

Elijah simply stated that you have to pick, you cannot worship both. And the people had no argument against the pure logic of his statement. Then, after establishing that, Elijah proved that God, not Baal was the true and only God.

Jesus had another way of saying that.

Matthew 6:24 (NASB)
24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

There are many things in this world that God has provided for us to enjoy, but when we start to worship them, we are not worshiping God.

Father, help me to keep the right perspective on the things of this world. May I glorify you by enjoying your creation. Help me to never make them my master, but always worship Jesus alone.

Always praying for the glory of God,
