A Humbling Thought

Isaiah 64:8 (NASB)
8 But now, O LORD, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand.

Isaiah 66:2 (NASB)
2 “For My hand made all these things, Thus all these things came into being,” declares the LORD. “But to this one I will look, To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word.

Proverbs 29:23 (NASB)
23 A man’s pride will bring him low, But a humble spirit will obtain honor.

Isaiah 2:17 (NASB)
17 The pride of man will be humbled And the loftiness of men will be abased; And the LORD alone will be exalted in that day,

1 John 2:16 (NASB)
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.

In his book on Humility, Andrew Murray says that pride is from Adam and humility comes only from the Holy Spirit.

I had to think about that for a while. Was it pride that caused Adam to eat from the tree? He had been given paradise and all he could want except for one thing. That one thing eventually became something he had to have because his pride told him that he deserved it too. Since pride came to us from Adam, it has been with us for a long time. It isn’t something that we can just shake off. In fact we can’t do anything to remove pride by ourselves. It can only be dealt with by God, as we die to self.

Self is a pretty hard thing to give up. Many of us have a lot of years invested in our “self”. What is startling is that there isn’t anything within us, apart from the Holy Spirit, that is worth keeping. Can you believe that?

And yet, He still loves us. Now that is a humbling thought. I pray that this spark of humility from the Holy Spirit will grow. I pray that my pride will die as I die to self.

Always praying for the glory of God,
