Sanctification Stagnation

If we are not changed by grace, we are not saved by grace.
A.W. Tozer

A number of years ago, I attended a seminar by Dr. Lyle Dorsett from the C.S. Lewis Institute. One of the things that he talked about was the path of sanctification by the Christian. His observation was that if you plot sanctification against time, what we find is that many people in churches today have long periods of no growth.

There seems to be a contentment with the status quo. Rather than an increasing thirst for Jesus, the Christian is happy with where they are. Rather than challenging themselves to strive for the perfection of Jesus, they instead compare where they are with other Christians and conclude that they are doing ok.

With each new year, many people inspect how they did during the previous year. From a spiritual point of view, have you done the same? Have I grown as a Christian in the last year? Has my worship of Jesus grown compared to last year? Is my prayer life stronger than last year? Or, have I drifted along, content with where I am?

Heavenly Father, I pray that my thirst for your grace would grow each day. Holy Spirit, fill me with a desire to stay on an upward path of sanctification. Don’t let me become complacent or content. Amen.

Always praying for the glory of God,
