Philemon 1:1-3
Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother,
To Philemon our beloved brother and fellow worker, and to Apphia our sister, and to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
On the Greek island of Santorini, the predominant and possibly only church is the Greek Orthodox Church. However, the total number of churches on this small island is not known. For the majority of churches are actually in the homes of the people that live there. The distinctive white washed buildings with blue accents also, in many cases, have a cross affixed somewhere on the building. The cross denotes that the house is a church, typically a church of a family or group of families.
The early Christian church was typically in the home as well, as Paul noted in his introduction to his letter to Philemon. Although the Sabbath was set aside as a day of worship, the home was a church seven days a week. Believers fellowshipped, studied, prayed, and shared meals every day of the week.
Today, the majority of Christian churches are in a building, where people gather once a week to worship. From the outside world, it would appear that church is just done on Sundays. And in many cases that is true. God, however, intended us to worship him every day, with a special day set aside once a week to worship and rest in Him.
Heavenly Father, I pray that my home will be a church where my family can worship you every day. I pray that family and friends that visit will see that our home is dedicated to You and that our conduct and fellowship with others is a reflection of the worship that you deserve. Amen.
Always praying for the glory of God,
